History: wiki link
Personality:
Ada Wong is a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a little red dress. Which is to say, she's deceptive, selfish, provocative, guarded, and...competent.
Ada is playing a variety of roles from the first time we meet her: an Umbrella researcher named John clearly thought highly enough of her to make her name his password and request she kill him personally if he had turned due to infection. She introduces herself as an FBI agent and plays the part convincingly enough for an audience of a rookie cop, but not for a brilliant scientist who knew someone would be after her sooner than later. She's a mercenary, skilled and effective for the highest bidder, until the next one comes along. She's taking a risk after seemingly falling to her death to save the life of the one person who saw a glimpse of who she truly is and still saw good in her.
Who she truly is, however, is another creature entirely: someone seemingly cool and disconnected, focused on her goals and more than capable of achieving them. But she's also someone who takes detours to warn a man just trying to do the right thing, while telling her employer it's only to help meet her own ends. The kind of woman who promises to help a man to sanctuary but only if he meets his end of the deal. Rarely will she do something for nothing, nearly everything is transactional: she likes to break even, and barring that, to be owed. Her choices revolve around what will benefit her. And yet she'll still go out of her way to help someone, repeatedly, before that tab has been settled, whether that's information on a direction to go, a violent intervention, or a rocket launcher.
Mostly, this woman is full of contradictions. She's angry, in Raccoon City. It's part of her persona, yes, the vigilante FBI agent, the callous mercenary, but it's not difficult for her to draw on it. There's something already simmering there. In contrast, she's controlled, calm, collected, when she approaches Leon in Spain after 6 years pass between meetings. She's aloof with her employer, with Luis, with Leon. She isn't playing a role this time, at least not one so different from herself. And who she is, who she considers herself to be...is a bit of a blank slate. Even her name, Ada Wong, is quite clearly an alias. It's only when others continue to appeal to her humanity, some hoped for goodness in her, that it consistently cracks: Luis asking for a hand, Leon...being Leon.... and her employer unwittingly pushing her last button by admitting to a goal of global genocide, causing her to take her biggest risk yet.
All of this to say...Ada will do what most benefits Ada. But sometimes what benefits others can be mutual. She's shown herself to be passionate, to be capable of caring for others outside of herself, though especially if they still present some use to her. She's not heartless. But she keeps her interests close to the vest, is careful where she places her trust, and it hasn't let her down yet. Even if it keeps changing her in ways she didn't anticipate.
